Privacy Policy

We collect only what the platform needs to work. There are no hidden trackers gathering data in the background.

• Account details. When you register we ask for your name, email address, and a password. Your password is never stored in readable form — it is hashed before it reaches our database.
• Learning progress. As you work through lessons, vocabulary, and practice exercises, we record your progress — which lessons you have completed, your exercise results, and similar activity — so you can pick up where you left off.
• Newsletter email.If you subscribe to our “Word of the week” email, we store the address you give us for that purpose only.
• Technical basics. Like almost every website, our servers keep short-lived logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and troubleshooting.

We use your information to:

• create and manage your account, and keep you signed in;
• verify that your email address is really yours (via a one-time code when you register or reset your password);
• save and show your learning progress across lessons, vocabulary, and practice;
• send the emails described below — and nothing beyond them;
• keep the platform secure and fix problems when they occur.

We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.

We use a small number of cookies and browser storage entries, all of them functional — none are used for advertising or cross-site tracking.

• Session cookies. When you sign in, we set authentication cookies (access and refresh tokens) so you stay logged in as you move around the site.
• Theme preference.Your light/dark mode choice is kept in your browser’s local storage so the site remembers how you like to read.
• Verification timers. When you request a verification code, a short-lived entry in local storage remembers the resend cooldown so the button behaves correctly.

You can clear cookies and local storage at any time through your browser settings; you will simply be signed out and your theme preference will reset.

• Account emails. One-time codes for email verification and password reset, and important notices about your account. These are essential and cannot be opted out of while you hold an account.
• Word of the week. Our optional newsletter — one German word, explained, once a week. You only receive it if you subscribe, and every issue includes an unsubscribe link.

No marketing blasts, no partner offers, no spam.

We never sell your personal information. We share it only in these narrow cases:

• Service providers. Trusted vendors that host our servers and deliver our emails process data on our behalf, under contracts that limit what they may do with it.
• Legal requirements. If the law genuinely requires it — for example, a valid court order — we may have to disclose information. We will resist overbroad requests.

We keep your account details and learning progress for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information within 30 days, except where a legal obligation requires us to keep a specific record longer. Server logs are rotated and deleted automatically on a short cycle.

All traffic between your browser and our servers is encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, never stored or logged in plain text, and sign-in is protected by short-lived tokens. Access to production data is restricted to the small number of people who operate the platform. No system is perfectly secure, but if we ever discover a breach affecting your data, we will inform you promptly.

Wherever you live, we extend the same rights to you:

• Access — ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Correction — fix anything that is wrong or out of date.
• Deletion — ask us to delete your account and the data that goes with it.
• Unsubscribe — leave the newsletter at any time with one click.

To exercise any of these, email us at the address below. We respond to every request, normally within a few days.

Deutsch is intended for learners aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

As the platform grows, this policy may need to change. When it does, we will update the “last updated” date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we will also notify you by email or with a notice on the site before the change takes effect.
